About this calculation

Convert bytes (B) to bits (bit) while preserving the underlying digital storage quantity. The calculator updates when the input changes and shows the conversion rule and a worked example.

Formula

bit = B × 8

Worked example

With Bytes: 1 B, bits is 8 bit.

How to convert bytes to bits

Enter a value in bytes. Multiply it by the factor in the displayed formula to express the same quantity in bits. To reverse the relationship, divide by the same nonzero factor.

bit = B × 8. As a reference point, 10 B equals 80 bit with this conversion. This is an example, not a recommended level or target.

What the unit relationship means

Bytes and bits describe the same amount of digital information using different unit sizes. Bits are individual binary digits; bytes group eight bits. Prefixes then scale those units, either decimally or, when an 'i' appears in the prefix, in powers of 1,024. This is a quantity conversion, not a data transfer speed. A rate such as megabits per second would also need a time unit and cannot be inferred from file size alone.

Check the direction of the result

As a scale check, one B corresponds to 8 bit. Doubling the input from 10 B to 20 B changes the calculated output from 80 bit to 160 bit. Ordinary factor conversions are proportional: zero maps to zero and doubling the input doubles the result. If a copied value does not follow this pattern, check the source unit, decimal point, and formula direction.

When this conversion is useful

Use bytes and bits to compare data quantities when one specification counts individual bits and another counts eight-bit bytes.

What to check

One byte contains eight bits. Unit symbols are case-sensitive: b means bit and B means byte. A data rate such as bits per second also has a time denominator. In this direction the entered bytes is reported as bits; check both unit symbols when copying a figure from another source, because the reverse direction answers a different question.

Precision and reporting

Check capitalization in every unit label before comparing values. A displayed number can be rounded even when the underlying byte count is exact; for a file or drive specification, the original byte count is the more reliable reference. Decimal and binary prefixes should be written explicitly. For a separate reporting example, 7.3 B produces 58.4 bit. If 7.3 B was an approximate reading, the converted digits should not be treated as a more accurate measurement.

Common questions
