About this calculation

eFG Calculator: Calculate effective field-goal percentage with extra credit for made three-point shots. Enter field goals made, three-pointers made, field goals attempted; the reported quantities are effective field-goal percentage (%). The equations and examples below show how those inputs lead to the result and where the model's assumptions matter.

Formula

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA × 100

Worked example

With Field goals made: 20, Three-pointers made: 7, Field goals attempted: 40, effective field-goal percentage is 58.75 %.

Method and inputs

Start with all made field goals, including made threes. Add half the made three-pointer count to reflect their extra point relative to a two-point basket. Divide by all field-goal attempts and multiply by one hundred.

Worked example

For 20 made field goals, including 7 threes, on 40 attempts, the adjusted numerator is 23.5. Effective field-goal percentage is 23.5/40 = 58.75 percent.

The example’s ordinary field-goal percentage is 20/40 = 50 percent, while eFG is 58.75 percent. The extra 8.75 percentage points come from the value of seven made threes, not from additional made baskets. This comparison shows exactly what the adjustment adds.

How to read the result

The adjustment compares field-goal scoring value rather than raw shooting accuracy. Free throws are excluded, so true shooting percentage can tell a different story for a player who draws many fouls.

An eFG above 100 percent is possible for an extreme tiny sample, such as making one three on one attempt: (1 + 0.5)/1 = 150 percent. It is an adjusted scoring-value index rather than a literal success fraction.

Assumptions and checks

Made three-pointers must be part of, not additional to, the total made field goals. Field-goal attempts must be positive. This form does not independently verify that threes do not exceed makes or makes do not exceed attempts.

Double-counting three-pointers as both extra makes and extra half makes inflates eFG. Use box-score fields with consistent definitions and compare games only after considering shot volume and defensive context.

The formula permits a quick consistency check against the box score. Three-pointers made cannot exceed all field goals made, and field goals made cannot exceed attempts. If those inequalities fail, the computed arithmetic may still be finite but the underlying basketball record is impossible.

Common questions

What does the efg calculator calculate?

It reports a field-goal percentage adjusted for the additional value of made threes, following the NBA glossary equation.

When should I recalculate or check another method?

Recalculate after the official box score is final. For total scoring efficiency including foul shots, use a true shooting calculation instead.
