Final Grade Calculator
Combine completed coursework and a final assessment into an overall percentage.
How the result changes
Only current coursework grade changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. The line illustrates the formula across the shown range. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.
About this calculation
A final course grade depends on both component scores and their weighting. This calculator combines a current coursework percentage with a final assessment percentage, assigning the final the remaining weight after coursework. Calculate final grade when planning a course or exam.
Formula
overall grade = coursework grade × coursework weight + final grade × remaining weight
Worked example
With Current coursework grade: 82 %, Coursework weight: 70 %, Final assessment grade: 90 %, overall grade is 84.4 %.
Inputs and units
Enter scores as percentages from zero to one hundred. Coursework weight is the percent of the course already represented by the current grade; the final assessment automatically receives 100 minus that weight.
- Current coursework grade (%): Use the grade earned across work already completed.
- Coursework weight (%): Enter the share of the overall grade assigned to that coursework.
- Final assessment grade (%): Enter an actual or hypothetical final-exam score.
Calculation and worked example
Convert the coursework weight to a fraction and multiply by current score. Convert the remaining percent to a fraction and multiply by final score. Add the weighted contributions for overall grade In compact notation, overall grade = coursework grade × coursework weight + final grade × remaining weight.
With coursework at 82%, a 70% coursework weight, and a 90% final score, the overall grade is 82 × 0.70 + 90 × 0.30 = 84.4%. The final contributes 27 percentage points.
How to use the answer
The final contribution is measured in percentage points of the overall course, not the final exam's standalone score. An overall 84.4% may map to a letter grade differently under different syllabi.
Try several plausible final scores to see how much the overall percentage can change. If the course contains more categories, combine them using a full weighted-grade calculation rather than forcing them into a single coursework average.
Assumptions and checks
Only two components exist: completed coursework and one final assessment, and their weights sum to exactly 100%. Extra credit, curves, category drop rules, and score caps are not modelled.
Entering the final's 30% weight as 70 would reverse the two components; this form specifically asks for coursework weight. Also avoid adding 82 and 90 then dividing by two unless the components truly have equal weights.
If current and final scores are equal, the overall grade must equal that common score regardless of weight. At zero coursework weight, it must equal the final score.
Common questions
What does the overall grade result represent?
It is the weighted percentage across coursework and the final assessment using the entered coursework weight and its complement.
What should I check before relying on this result?
Check the syllabus for exact category weights and rules on rounding, dropped assignments, curves, or extra credit before interpreting the result.
