Idling Fuel Consumption Calculator
Estimate fuel and cost for engine idling using a selected hourly burn rate.
How the result changes
Only idling time changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. The line illustrates the formula across the shown range. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.
About this calculation
An idling engine consumes fuel even when the odometer does not advance. This calculator separates stationary hours, a user-supplied burn rate, and the price of fuel so each assumption can be revised. Estimate idling fuel consumption when planning a trip or vehicle expense.
Formula
idle fuel = idling hours × fuel burn per hour; cost = fuel × unit price
Worked example
With Idling time: 3 h, Idle fuel rate: 0.4 US gal/h, Fuel price: 3.5 currency units/US gal, fuel used while idling is 1.2 US gal.
Inputs and units
Enter the total engine-on stationary hours. Supply a fuel burn rate in US gallons per hour for the particular vehicle and conditions, plus the price paid per US gallon. Air conditioning, engine size, and load can change the actual rate.
- Idling time (h): Count actual engine-on time while the vehicle is stationary.
- Idle fuel rate (US gal/h): Use a measured or vehicle-specific idling rate; the default is illustrative.
- Fuel price (currency units/US gal): Enter price per US gallon in the desired currency.
Calculation and worked example
Multiply hours by gallons per hour to obtain fuel used, then multiply those gallons by currency units per gallon. The time and fuel units cancel correctly, leaving money for the cost result In compact notation, idle fuel = idling hours × fuel burn per hour; cost = fuel × unit price.
Three hours at an assumed 0.4 US gallons per hour use 1.2 gallons. At 3.5 currency units per gallon, the fuel-only cost is 4.2 currency units.
How to use the answer
The output estimates only fuel burned at the selected rate. It is not a complete operating cost and does not price maintenance, battery use, emissions, or wear from repeated starts.
Compare two idling scenarios by changing hours while holding the same measured rate. For a mixed fleet, calculate each vehicle separately because one idling rate should not be copied across dissimilar engines.
Assumptions and checks
The hourly burn rate stays constant during the entered interval and all fuel is priced equally. Warm-up periods, variable electrical loads, hybrid stop-start systems, and engine-off time are outside this simplified model.
Moving fuel economy in miles per gallon into the gallons-per-hour field is a unit error; idling has nearly zero miles, so a highway MPG figure cannot supply an hourly idle rate.
At one hour, the fuel result must equal the entered gallons-per-hour rate. At zero hours, both fuel and fuel-only cost must be zero.
Common questions
What does the fuel used while idling result represent?
It is the estimated US gallons consumed during stationary engine-on time at the specific burn rate you entered.
What should I check before relying on this result?
Confirm an appropriate idle-rate estimate, total engine-on hours, US versus imperial gallons, and the fuel price's unit.
