Paper Weight Calculator

Estimate paper mass from sheet area, grammage, and sheet count. The GSM rating converts sheet area into grams per sheet and kilograms for a stack.

Only sheet length changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. The line illustrates the formula across the shown range. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.

About this calculation

GSM states how many grams one square metre of paper weighs, not the weight of a single sheet. This calculator scales that basis weight to your sheet dimensions and count, reporting one-sheet grams and total kilograms. Estimate paper weight when planning work or study time.

Formula

grams per sheet = length mm × width mm ÷ 1,000,000 × GSM

Worked example

With Sheet length: 297 mm, Sheet width: 210 mm, Paper basis weight: 80 g/m², Sheet count: 500 sheets, mass per sheet is 4.9896 g.

Inputs and units

Measure sheet length and width in millimetres and read the paper stock's grams-per-square-metre rating. A ream count must be converted to physical sheets before entry; do not assume every package has the same quantity.

  • Sheet length (mm): Measure one edge of a sheet in millimetres.
  • Sheet width (mm): Measure the perpendicular edge of that sheet.
  • Paper basis weight (g/m²): Use the stated grammage for the paper stock.
  • Sheet count (sheets): Count sheets, not printed sides or reams unless converted.

Calculation and worked example

Divide millimetre length times width by one million to obtain square metres per sheet. Multiply by GSM for grams per sheet, then by sheet count and divide by one thousand for kilograms In compact notation, grams per sheet = length mm × width mm ÷ 1,000,000 × GSM.

An A4-size 297 × 210 mm sheet has area 0.06237 m². At 80 g/m² it weighs about 4.9896 g, so 500 sheets weigh about 2.4948 kg before packaging.

How to use the answer

The mass is a material estimate based on nominal GSM and area. It does not include a box, wrapper, ink, staples, or moisture variation, all of which can affect a shipment's measured weight.

Estimate a print job's paper-only mass or compare 80 GSM with 120 GSM stock. If sheets are cut to custom dimensions, enter those actual millimetres rather than a named standard paper size.

Assumptions and checks

Every sheet has the same measured area and the paper's grammage is uniform and accurate. Holes, trimming, and printing materials are excluded.

GSM is grams per square metre, so multiplying by millimetre area without dividing by one million makes a millionfold error. Also distinguish sheet count from page count in duplex printing.

A full 1 m by 1 m sheet at 80 GSM must weigh 80 g. The default A4 sheet is a little over six percent of that area and thus just under five grams.

Common questions

What does the mass per sheet result represent?

It is the area-based estimated mass of one unprinted sheet at the entered GSM, with a second output for all sheets in kilograms.

What should I check before relying on this result?

Check sheet dimensions, actual package sheet count, and GSM; add packaging and printed material if shipping mass matters.
