Rounding Calculator
Round a decimal value to a chosen number of places after the decimal point.
How the result changes
Only value to round changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. The line illustrates the formula across the shown range. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.
About this calculation
Rounding Calculator: Round a decimal value to a chosen number of places after the decimal point. Enter value to round, decimal places; the reported quantities are rounded value, rounding difference. The equations and examples below show how those inputs lead to the result and where the model's assumptions matter.
Formula
rounded = round(value × 10^places) / 10^places
Worked example
With Value to round: 12.3456, Decimal places: 2, rounded value is 12.35.
Method and inputs
Multiply by ten raised to the requested number of decimal places, apply JavaScript Math.round, then divide by the same power. The difference output subtracts the original value from the rounded value so you can see the signed change.
Worked example
Rounding 12.3456 to two decimal places gives 12.35. The rounding difference is 0.0044. Rounding the same value to zero places gives 12, demonstrating that the selected precision controls the amount of information retained.
Consider 2.675 rounded to two decimal places. Binary floating-point may store the value slightly below its decimal representation, so a machine result can surprise someone expecting textbook decimal half-up rounding. For invoices or taxes, a decimal-arithmetic library with a specified rule is safer.
How to read the result
The difference may be positive or negative because rounding can move up or down. This calculator uses Math.round, whose exact halfway cases move toward positive infinity; for example -1.5 becomes -1 rather than -2.
The difference output is a useful audit signal. Rounding 12.3456 to 12.35 increases it by 0.0044; rounding down to one decimal place produces 12.3 and a negative difference of 0.0456. Accumulating many such differences can matter in a large data set.
Assumptions and checks
The place count is restricted to whole numbers from zero to eight. Floating-point storage can represent some decimal fractions only approximately, so rare values close to a halfway point may require a decimal-arithmetic method for financial reporting.
Do not repeatedly round each intermediate calculation when only the final answer needs rounding; accumulated differences may change a result. For currency, tax or accounting rules, check the prescribed midpoint policy rather than assuming every jurisdiction uses Math.round.
Common questions
What does the rounding calculator calculate?
It returns the rounded number and the signed amount by which rounding changed the original. The displayed precision follows the chosen count of decimal places.
When should I recalculate or check another method?
Recalculate if the reporting convention changes from two decimal places to significant figures or to a different midpoint rule. Those are separate procedures even if they occasionally produce the same visible digits.
