About this calculation

Time Lapse Calculator: Estimate captured frame count and finished clip duration from shoot time, capture interval and playback rate. Enter shooting duration, capture interval, playback frame rate; the reported quantities are captured frames (frames), finished clip duration (seconds). The equations and examples below show how those inputs lead to the result and where the model's assumptions matter.

Formula

frames = ceil(shoot seconds / interval); video seconds = frames / fps

Worked example

With Shooting duration: 60 minutes, Capture interval: 5 seconds, Playback frame rate: 30 fps, captured frames is 720 frames.

Method and inputs

A camera captures a frame at each regular interval during the stated shoot duration. Dividing total shoot seconds by interval and rounding up models capture instants starting at zero but before the end instant. Divide captured frames by playback frames per second for clip duration.

Worked example

For a 60-minute shoot with a frame every 5 seconds, 3,600/5 gives 720 frames. Playing 720 frames at 30 per second produces a 24-second clip.

The 720-frame example played at 24 fps would last 30 seconds instead of 24 seconds at 30 fps. Changing playback fps changes duration without changing the captured source frames. Changing capture interval changes frame count and therefore the apparent speed of moving subjects.

How to read the result

The output describes ideal scheduling, not the final edited timeline. Holding frames, dropping frames, exposure delays and camera buffer limits change real production. Frame count also informs storage planning when multiplied by average file size.

A five-second interval over an hour assumes each capture happens reliably. If a camera misses ten frames, clip duration at 30 fps falls by one third of a second. For long unattended shoots, leave capacity for battery, storage and unexpected interruptions.

Assumptions and checks

The camera must sustain the selected interval and each exposure must fit within it. This calculation assumes fixed playback rate and no repeated frames. A workflow that captures both the opening and exact ending instant may yield one extra frame.

Do not enter shoot duration in seconds into a minutes field. Also distinguish playback fps from the capture interval: one is frames per second in the final clip, the other is seconds between source frames.

Common questions

What does the time lapse calculator calculate?

It reports the expected number of captured frames and the approximate finished clip length for a simple regular time-lapse.

When should I recalculate or check another method?

Recalculate after changing interval or export frame rate. If exposure time overlaps the next capture or the editor applies speed changes, test a short segment before committing to a long shoot.
