Add Time Calculator
Add two elapsed durations and display total minutes, hours, and leftover minutes.
How the result changes
Only first hours changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. Each dot represents one whole-number input. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.
About this calculation
Adding time durations can carry sixty minutes into an extra hour. This calculator performs that carry explicitly, showing both one total-minute number and the familiar completed-hours plus minute-remainder form. Estimate add time when scheduling dates and durations.
Formula
total minutes = 60 × (first hours + second hours) + first minutes + second minutes
Worked example
With First hours: 1 h, First minutes: 50 min, Second hours: 2 h, Second minutes: 25 min, total minutes is 255 min.
Inputs and units
Enter each duration as separate hours and minutes. The hour fields are elapsed hours and can be greater than 23; the minute fields are remainders and should stay below 60.
- First hours (h): Use whole hours from the first elapsed duration.
- First minutes (min): Enter a minute remainder from 0 to 59.
- Second hours (h): Use whole hours from the second elapsed duration.
- Second minutes (min): Enter a minute remainder from 0 to 59.
Calculation and worked example
Convert both durations to minutes and add them. Divide by 60 and take the whole-number part to find completed hours; the remainder after division by 60 gives the leftover minutes In compact notation, total minutes = 60 × (first hours + second hours) + first minutes + second minutes.
One hour 50 minutes plus two hours 25 minutes is 110 + 145 = 255 minutes. That is four completed hours with a 15-minute remainder, often written 4 h 15 min.
How to use the answer
The completed-hours and remainder outputs describe the same duration as total minutes. They are not separate quantities to add again; 255 minutes already includes all four hours and fifteen minutes.
Combine work sessions, exercise intervals, travel legs, or media clips when a total elapsed time is needed. Calculate durations across midnight before adding them; entering clock times directly would misrepresent an overnight span.
Assumptions and checks
The two periods are nonnegative elapsed durations measured to the minute. This page does not apply time zones, dates, daylight-saving changes, or breaks automatically.
Adding 50 and 25 gives 75 minutes, which must become one hour and 15 minutes. A common error is reporting three hours and 75 minutes without carrying, or treating 4.15 as decimal hours.
Multiply the completed-hours result by 60 and add the minute remainder. That reconstruction must equal the displayed total minutes for every valid pair of inputs.
Common questions
What does the total minutes result represent?
Total minutes is both entered durations expressed in a single unit; the two other outputs restate it as hours and leftover minutes.
What should I check before relying on this result?
Check that each minute field is a remainder from zero through 59, and convert wall-clock start/end times to elapsed durations first.
