Whole hours (h)Current: 2 → 2.75 h

Only whole hours changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. Each dot represents one whole-number input. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.

About this calculation

Payroll, timesheets, and project estimates often need decimal hours, while a timer shows hours and minutes. This calculator converts between those representations without treating minutes as hundredths of an hour. Estimate time to decimal when scheduling dates and durations.

Formula

decimal hours = whole hours + remaining minutes ÷ 60

Worked example

With Whole hours: 2 h, Remaining minutes: 45 min, decimal hours is 2.75 h.

Inputs and units

Provide the whole-hour part and the leftover minutes of one elapsed duration. For two hours and forty-five minutes, enter 2 and 45, even though the final decimal display will read 2.75.

  • Whole hours (h): Enter the full hours in the elapsed duration.
  • Remaining minutes (min): Use the minute remainder, not a decimal fraction of an hour.

Calculation and worked example

One hour contains 60 minutes, so divide the minute remainder by 60 and add it to whole hours. Alternatively multiply hours by 60 and add minutes to obtain the same duration as total minutes In compact notation, decimal hours = whole hours + remaining minutes ÷ 60.

Two hours and 45 minutes equals 2 + 45/60 = 2.75 decimal hours. As a check, 2 × 60 + 45 = 165 total minutes, and 165/60 is also 2.75.

How to use the answer

The decimal result is still measured in hours; its digits after the point are a fraction of 60 minutes. Thus 2.50 hours is two hours and thirty minutes, not two hours and fifty minutes.

Multiply decimal hours by an hourly rate for a rough labor-cost calculation, or compare a timed session with a decimal-hour target. Keep any company-specific rounding policy separate from the exact conversion shown here.

Assumptions and checks

The input is a duration with whole hours and a minute remainder between zero and 59. Seconds are not recorded, and the tool does not interpret a wall-clock time such as 14:45 as an elapsed period.

Typing 2.45 as decimal hours does not mean two hours 45 minutes; it equals two hours 27 minutes. Enter the components separately before converting to avoid that common timesheet error.

Thirty minutes must add exactly 0.5 hour, and fifteen minutes must add exactly 0.25 hour. Use those benchmarks to check the resulting decimal fraction.

Common questions

What does the decimal hours result represent?

It is the entered elapsed time expressed as a base-ten hour value, with minutes divided by sixty before addition.

What should I check before relying on this result?

Make sure the minute entry is between zero and 59 and apply any payroll rounding rules only after the precise conversion.
