Only number of die rolls changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. Each dot represents one whole-number input. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.

About this calculation

Dice Probability Calculator: Find the chance of seeing a chosen face at least once in repeated fair six-sided die rolls. Enter number of die rolls; the reported quantities are at least one chosen face (%), no chosen face (%). The equations and examples below show how those inputs lead to the result and where the model's assumptions matter.

Formula

P(at least one match) = 1 - (5/6)^rolls

Worked example

With Number of die rolls: 3 rolls, at least one chosen face is 42.13 %.

Method and inputs

Choose one specific face, such as six, before rolling. Each fair six-sided die misses that face with probability five sixths. For independent rolls, multiply these misses; subtract from one to get the chance of at least one match.

Worked example

Across three rolls, the chance of no six is (5/6)^3, about 57.87 percent. The complementary chance of at least one six is about 42.13 percent. The calculator displays both complementary events.

The first roll gives one-sixth chance of the chosen face. A second independent roll does not simply add another one-sixth, because the same face may appear on both rolls; the at-least-one chance is 11/36, about 30.56 percent.

How to read the result

The result covers one or more appearances of the chosen face, not exactly one appearance. Any face has the same probability if the die is fair, so entering the face number would not change the calculation.

As roll count increases, the no-match probability shrinks toward zero but never becomes exactly zero for a finite count. Ten rolls still leave roughly 16.15 percent chance of no chosen face. Probability is not a guarantee that an event will occur.

Assumptions and checks

Rolls must be independent and the die must be approximately fair. Loaded dice or draws from a finite bag of numbered tokens need different probabilities. The count of rolls is a whole number between one and fifty.

Adding one-sixth repeatedly can exceed one and ignores overlap among possible rolls. The complement method handles repeated opportunities correctly. Rolling multiple physical dice at once is equivalent only if their outcomes are independent.

Common questions

What does the dice probability calculator calculate?

It gives the chance that a chosen face appears at least once and the chance that it never appears over the entered number of rolls.

When should I recalculate or check another method?

Recalculate for a different number of rolls. For the chance of exactly k matching faces, use a binomial model with success probability one sixth instead of this at-least-one shortcut.
