Odds Calculator
Convert an event probability expressed as a percentage into both favorable and adverse odds ratios.
How the result changes
Only probability changes; all other inputs stay at your current values. The line illustrates the formula across the shown range. This is not a forecast of real-world outcomes.
About this calculation
Odds Calculator: Convert an event probability expressed as a percentage into both favorable and adverse odds ratios. Enter probability; the reported quantities are odds in favor ratio, odds against ratio. The equations and examples below show how those inputs lead to the result and where the model's assumptions matter.
Formula
odds in favor = p/(100-p); odds against = (100-p)/p
Worked example
With Probability: 40 %, odds in favor ratio is 0.666667.
Method and inputs
Divide the chance of the event by the chance it does not occur to get odds in favor. Reverse that fraction for odds against. The input is a percentage, so its complement is one hundred minus the entered percentage.
Worked example
At 40 percent probability, favorable odds are 40/60 = 0.6667 to one, equivalent to 2:3. Odds against are 60/40 = 1.5 to one, equivalent to 3:2.
Odds in favor and against are reciprocals. For a 40-percent event, favorable odds are 2:3 and adverse odds are 3:2. Multiplying their ratio values returns one, which is a useful arithmetic check after converting a stated chance.
How to read the result
Odds are a ratio of event to nonevent chances, not another percentage. A probability of 50 percent corresponds to even odds, one to one. As the probability approaches zero, odds against grow very large.
Probability compares favorable outcomes with all outcomes, while odds compare favorable with unfavorable outcomes. This denominator difference becomes substantial away from even chance. A 75-percent probability corresponds to 3:1 favorable odds, not 0.75:1.
Assumptions and checks
The input excludes exact zero and one hundred percent because one of the displayed ratios would require division by zero. Events must have a well-defined probability and complement.
Do not read 2:3 odds as a two-thirds probability; it means two favorable parts in five total, or 40 percent. Betting odds with payouts or bookmaker margin require additional interpretation.
For an event with ten-percent probability, odds in favor are 1:9 and against are 9:1. When probability rises to twenty percent, favorable odds become 1:4. The ratio changes faster than a simple ten-percentage-point shift might suggest, especially near the extremes.
Common questions
What does the odds calculator calculate?
It expresses a probability as event-versus-nonevent and nonevent-versus-event ratios.
When should I recalculate or check another method?
Recalculate after updating the underlying probability. If quoted market odds are the starting point, an implied-probability conversion is the appropriate direction instead.
