Age Difference Calculator

Compare two birth dates in exact calendar days and completed years apart.

DATE TIMELINE

The interval at a glance

The timeline follows the entered dates. For counting conventions, holidays or rounding, see the explanation below.

About this calculation

People described as five years apart can differ by fewer or more calendar days depending on birthdays and leap years. This calculator gives the exact midnight-to-midnight day gap and the number of completed anniversary years between two birth dates. Calculate age difference when scheduling dates and durations.

Formula

day difference = absolute difference between the two UTC-midnight dates

Worked example

With First birth date: 1990-08-20, Second birth date: 1995-02-10, difference in days is 1,635 days.

Inputs and units

Enter both valid Gregorian dates in either order. The calculation uses calendar dates rather than birth times, so it deliberately ignores how many hours apart within those dates the births occurred.

  • First birth date: Enter one person's date of birth in year-month-day form.
  • Second birth date: Enter the other person's date of birth; either can be earlier.

Calculation and worked example

Convert both dates to UTC midnight and take the absolute timestamp difference divided by 86,400,000 milliseconds. To count completed years, compare the later date against anniversaries of the earlier date rather than simply dividing the day gap by 365 In compact notation, day difference = absolute difference between the two UTC-midnight dates.

August 20, 1990 and February 10, 1995 are more than four but less than five full anniversary years apart. The day result shows the exact calendar-date separation, including the leap day in 1992.

How to use the answer

The day number is an absolute gap and cannot indicate which person is older; inspect the dates for direction. Completed years apart truncates the unfinished next year, so it is intentionally a whole number.

Compare sibling ages or check the time between two birth records. For ages at a particular present or historical date, calculate each person's age on that date separately; the date gap alone does not supply two current ages.

Assumptions and checks

The two recorded dates are correct and UTC midnights represent whole calendar days. The count uses the proleptic Gregorian calendar and does not model historical adoption dates, time of birth, or local time zones.

Subtracting year numbers alone can overstate completed years when the later month-day precedes the earlier one. Dividing by 365 also introduces leap-day error in the day comparison.

Identical dates must produce zero days and zero completed years. Reversing the first and second dates should leave both absolute results unchanged.

Common questions

What does the difference in days result represent?

It is the exact number of calendar days between the two entered dates, with order ignored and each date treated as UTC midnight.

What should I check before relying on this result?

Confirm the recorded birth dates and remember that completed years apart is not the same as either person's age today.

Inputs

  • First birth date
  • Second birth date
